The judgment call
This is the cleanest senior move a software engineer can make on our graph, and the observed data confirms engineers actually walk it. The cloud fluency is already there, AWS, Azure, Python sit in the HAVE list, so the role is less a retraining than a change in altitude. A software engineer is measured by the code they ship; a solutions architect is measured by the systems they let other people ship, and by whether the business bought the design. That shift is where the real work is.
The gap is not technical depth, engineers usually have too much of it, it is breadth and translation: sketching a system across services you will never personally write, sizing tradeoffs for a budget conversation, and explaining the whole thing to a room that cannot read a stack trace. Pre-sales and stakeholder framing feel foreign to a lot of strong engineers, and they are exactly the differentiator.
The pay band, 95,000 to 160,000 in our corpus, reflects the seniority. Concrete first step: volunteer to own the design document for the next cross-team system, then present it to the least technical stakeholder you can find and rewrite whatever they did not follow.
