WELDER

You will lay out, fabricate, assemble, modify, repair and install ferrous metals, nonferrous metals, plates, shapes, sheet metal, hatches, scuttles, water tight doors and pipe.

You will work onboard ships, boats, craft and in production shops.

You will manufacture and install interior and exterior items including bulwarks, structures, coamings, doors, foundations, gratings, hatches, pipes, bulkheads, racks, railings, sea chests, trunks, yardarms, and sheet metal assemblies.

You will prepare surfaces for welding, burning, sheet metal riveting and lays out/templates for holes to be drilled.

You will use precision tools such as micrometers, depth gauges, and calipers for tolerance work.

You will mix coatings in accordance with material safety data sheet instructions for paints, activators, solvents, thinners and additives, in order to obtain proper application viscosities.

You will set up jigs, fixtures, bolts, clamps, blocks, tack welds and otherwise secures parts in proper alignment for welding.

You will use arc welding equipment, correctly connects power cables, grounds, tanks properly to machines, generators and transformers.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

You may be required to work aboard surface vessels while underway on trial runs or regular operations. Incumbent must be capable to perform physically demanding Journeyman Welder/shipfitter work daily. Incumbent lifts and carries weights up to 50 pounds and physical exertion is required at frequent intervals.

Incumbent must frequently lift, pull, push and carry heavy structural parts, tools and equipment. Incumbent must walk frequently to and from machines, shops, and various points aboard ships. May be required to stand continuously while working at a bench in the shop, assembling parts, or operating machines.

Incumbent may be required to frequently stoop, kneel, and crawl when making measurements and laying out placement lines for assemblies or installing work in cramped places. They also frequently climb ladders or stagings on high assemblies in shops and aboard ship while assembling and installing structural parts.
