Berners Schober is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer in Madison, WI to join our growing team and help lead the design of thoughtful, high-performing mechanical systems for education, healthcare, commercial, and community-focused projects.

This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, collaborating across disciplines, mentoring others, and building strong client relationships. This position is currently remote; however, there is a possibility it would be in-office or hybrid if a Madison office location is established in the future.

Role Description: The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for developing HVAC solutions for design projects participating as an integral member of the project team.

This role is directly involved and responsible for the planning, designing, and engineering of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems for educational, health care and/or commercial buildings. Key Responsibilities:

Project Design & Delivery

Lead the mechanical system design for assigned projects from concept through construction administration.

Prepare and review mechanical design documents, including drawings, specifications, and calculations.

Coordinate mechanical design with architectural, electrical, structural, and other disciplines to ensure integrated solutions.

Support project managers and discipline leads in meeting project schedules, budgets, and client expectations.

Participate in construction administration activities, including submittal review, RFIs, site visits, and field observations.

Technical Expertise & Quality

Ensure mechanical designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and firm best practices.

Apply sound engineering judgment to address complex technical challenges and system coordination issues.

Contribute to continuous improvement of technical standards, tools, and templates within the mechanical discipline.

Conduct calculations of heating/cooling load, ventilation quantities and equipment selection for building mechanical systems

Conduct assessment of existing systems and provide recommendations for refurbishment or replacement

Mentorship & Collaboration

Provide day-to-day technical guidance and informal mentoring to junior mechanical engineering staff.

Support the development of less experienced engineers through design reviews, feedback, and knowledge sharing.

Collaborate effectively with peers, discipline leads, and firm leadership to support project success.

Promote a collaborative, solutions-oriented working environment.

Client & Team Engagement

Participate in client meetings and coordination calls as needed to support project execution.

Communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and external partners.

Represent the firm positively through technical expertise, responsiveness, and professionalism.

Education & Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or a related field, required.

Professional Engineer (PE) license in WI, required. PE license in IL, preferred.

10+ years of experience in HVAC Mechanical Engineering, preferred.

Prior healthcare experience, preferred.

Experience in Microsoft Office, Revit, required.

Physical Demands

Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.

Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.

Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.

Occasional travel may be required.

Occasionally required to stand; walk; climb, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
