About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
As a member of our Litigation and Regulatory team, you will take primary responsibility for managing government and regulatory investigations, inquiries, and information requests directed at Anthropic, from initial contact through resolution.
These matters may come from various sources, such as federal agencies, state attorneys general, and international regulatory bodies, and could range from informal inquiries to formal civil investigative demands, subpoenas, and multi-agency investigations.
You will lead our response with minimal supervision, manage outside counsel, and work cross-functionally to gather information efficiently and with minimal disruption to the business.
You may also advise on the regulatory dimensions of business decisions before they become inquiries, helping product, commercial, and policy colleagues understand how regulators are likely to view a launch, partnership, or practice. We may also ask you to flex into managing cases on our civil litigation docket. The right candidate brings the instincts of a litigator, the judgment of a counselor, and an interest in building the systems that let a small team handle a growing docket well.
Key responsibilities
Manage regulatory investigations and inquiries from initial contact through resolution, including scoping and negotiating requests with agency staff, coordinating document collection and production, preparing witnesses, and drafting written responses and submissions
Manage Congressional investigations or inquiries
Manage and collaborate with outside counsel across all stages of an investigation, keeping matters efficient and aligned with company priorities
Work cross-functionally with technical, product, policy, and business teams to collect information efficiently, evaluate risk, and develop resolution strategies
Represent Anthropic in interactions with regulators and enforcement staff, and support public policy colleagues in broader regulator engagement
Develop internal processes, playbooks, and tools that make regulatory response scalable and consistent across matters, including where inquiries may overlap with each other or litigation
Track enforcement trends and regulatory developments and share them with stakeholders in a form they can act on
Flex to support litigation and other matters as the team's needs evolve
Minimum qualifications
JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
Substantial experience managing government or regulatory investigations, including responding to civil investigative demands, subpoenas, or comparable formal requests
Experience working with technology companies and/or technical clients
Strong communication, legal writing and analytical skills, with the ability to distill complex facts and law into clear advice for legal and non-legal audiences
Experience managing outside counsel and coordinating large information requests across an organization
Sound judgment on risk tradeoffs, and the ability to move work forward with incomplete information
Integrity, curiosity, and a willingness to take on the hands-on work that a growing team requires
Composure under time pressure and public scrutiny
Preferred qualifications
At least 8-12 years of practicing law with a combination of experience at a global-focused law firm and in-house
Experience with enforcement matters before federal agencies, state attorneys general, or international regulatory bodies
Prior experience at a regulatory or enforcement agency
Working knowledge of competition and antitrust law or cybersecurity/privacy law
Civil litigation experience, particularly for technology companies working with novel products
Familiarity with AI-specific regulatory frameworks
Experience building sustainable regulatory-response processes at a growth-stage company
A commitment to the development of AI that is both innovative and trustworthy, including an understanding of the risks and limitations that must be addressed alongside the benefits

How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles.
We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
