The judgment call
The readiness number on this page is the most misleading number in the set, and worth explaining before you believe it. UX (user-experience design) postings ask for a stack of words, user research, interaction design, design systems, that graphic-design postings simply do not print, so the overlap math reads low. But look at what the corpus already credits graphic designers with: Figma, prototyping, wireframing, accessibility. The tools are mostly shared. What is not shared is a way of working. Graphic design defends a final artifact; UX defends a decision, and has to show the research and the failed variants that led there.
The gap most graphic designers underestimate is not skill, it is evidence: a portfolio of beautiful screens reads as graphic design no matter how it is labeled. The move is won or lost on one case study that shows a problem, the research, three rejected directions, and a measured outcome.
The pay makes the work worth it, UX medians run tens of thousands above graphic design, and BLS (the US Bureau of Labor Statistics) projects the two fields moving in opposite directions. Concrete first step: take one project you already shipped and rewrite it as a process story, not a gallery.
