ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR CIVICS HUMANITIES ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES (CHASS)

Major Duties of the Position: The Associate Dean for Civics, Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS): Provides academic leadership and portfolio administration (40%) for the CHASS academic portfolio, establishing priorities, translating senior-leader direction into executable academic objectives, and overseeing academic programs, curriculum, governance, assessment, scheduling, faculty utilization, resource requirements, and continuous improvement.

Ensures that CHASS operates as a coherent, integrated general-education program combining disciplinary rigor with intellectual breadth. Supervises and develops faculty and staff (25%), including civilian and military personnel and subordinate leaders as assigned.

Plans and assigns work; establishes performance expectations; evaluates performance; supports recruitment and staffing; identifies training and developmental needs; addresses employee concerns; and promotes organizational effectiveness, accountability, and a professional workplace.

Oversees curriculum integration, academic quality, assessment, and cadet development (20%) across the CHASS portfolio.

Guides curriculum development and review, academic standards, learning outcomes, instructional approaches, assessment, program evaluation, and interdisciplinary integration, ensuring that programs contribute effectively to cadets' development as critical thinkers, communicators, ethical decision-makers, and future officers.

Provides strategic integration, faculty development, and institutional engagement (15%) by developing faculty capability, encouraging scholarship and educational innovation, advising senior leaders on emerging academic and mission requirements, building partnerships, participating in institutional governance and strategic planning, and representing CHASS with USAFA, Department of the Air Force, academic institutions, government organizations, and professional and civic partners.

Advises senior academic leadership and manages portfolio resources, including personnel, workload, instructional support, technology, space, partnerships, and other mission requirements. Evaluates competing priorities, organizational risks, and resource implications and recommends appropriate courses of action.

May teach, mentor, advise, conduct scholarship or research, or participate in other academic activities when assigned and appropriately qualified; however, these duties support rather than replace the position's primary academic-administrative and supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be current USAFA faculty members and hold the academic rank of either associate professor (AD-1701-23) or Professor (AD-1701-24). USAFA faculty currently serving in an AD-1720-25 academic administration role with the requisite academic credentials are also eligible to apply.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: We are particularly interested in senior faculty who bring: * A strong record as a USAFA educator. * Sustained superior performance in teaching, scholarship, and institutional service * Experience leading faculty, programs, courses, departments, or significant academic initiatives. * A record of teaching and scholarship in civics, humanities, arts, or social sciences that demonstrates intellectual breadth and serious interdisciplinary and/or integrated engagement. * A commitment to building a rigorous, formative, integrated general education program, with experience in common-core, primary-text, seminar, writing-intensive, Western civilization, civic education, or comparable undergraduate curricula and in developing disciplinary specialists as effective teachers within a common curriculum.
