Nurse (Research Specialist)

As a GS-12 Nurse (Research Specialist), the incumbent would be responsible for the following duties: Serving as an independently licensed nurse, within the NHLBI Office of the Clinical Director, who participates in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing practices for an assigned clinical area.

The incumbent collaborates with the Principal Investigator (PI) and serves as an Associate Investigator (AI) on DIR clinical research studies. The incumbent serves in a liaison capacity with the scientific professional and administrative personnel from multiple areas to coordinate research participant care and meet research goals and objectives.

Contributes to discussions regarding feasibility of study implementation with a specific focus on clinical issues, available resources, study coordination, patient safety, and data quality. Identifies facilitators and barriers to study compliance.

Collaborates with PIs to identify and resolve protocol implementation problems during study development; designs and participates in revising data capture forms to meet study needs. Identifies the IRB of record for each study and adheres to IRB policies, including preferred method of contact.

Participates in providing timely, informative, and accurate communication to the IRB.

As a GS-13 Nurse (Research Specialist), the incumbent would be responsible for the following duties: The incumbent is an independently licensed nurse who serves as a senior nurse specialist, within the NHLBI Office of the Clinical Director, who participates in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing practices for an assigned clinical area.

Manage clinical and research support activities in order to assure patient safety, address clinical needs and assure study integrity and accurate data collection. Develops recruitment and retention plans. Assists the PI, AIs, and OCD leadership in the effective coordination of recruitment and retention efforts.

Evaluates and determines resources required to implement recruitment and retention plans. Consistently recognizes physician investigators and research staff for recruitment and retention efforts.

In order to meet the Basic Qualification Requirements for a Nurse (Research Specialist), GS-0610, you must have: Have a graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program.

This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools; AND Passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN); AND A current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to the Basic Qualification Requirements for a Nurse (Research Specialist), GS-0610, you must meet the Additional Qualification Requirement listed below for each grade level: You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: 1.

Providing direct nursing care to research participants, ensuring adherence to established clinical research protocols and standards of care. 2. Performing patient assessments, administering medications and treatments, and collecting clinical data. 3.

Educating research participants and their families on study procedures, potential risks, and benefits to ensure informed consent and protocol compliance. 4. Maintaining accurate documentation of all patient care activities and reporting adverse events and protocol deviations to senior research staff in a timely manner.

You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements: 1. Managing the care of patients enrolled in clinical research trials by developing and implementing individualized nursing care plans based on expert assessment. 2.

Serving as a key member of the research team by providing expert clinical consultation to Principal Investigators on the development, implementation, and evaluation of research protocols. 3.

Developing and delivering advanced education and training to research participants, families, and junior nursing staff on intricate protocol procedures and disease processes. 4.

Overseeing the quality and integrity of clinical research data by establishing and monitoring data collection procedures, ensuring compliance with GCP, federal, and institutional regulations. A combination of education and specialized experience that meets the qualification requirements for this position.
