Course: Counseling Skills

This course provides a broad understanding of counseling processes, including characteristics and behaviors that influence the helping processes. Included are age, gender, ethnic differences, verbal and nonverbal behaviors, personal characteristics, and orientations.

The development of counseling techniques is emphasized, including establishing and maintaining the counseling relationship; diagnosing and identifying the problem; formulating a preventative, treatment, or rehabilitative plan; facilitating appropriate interventions; and successfully terminating the counseling relationship.

Other Courses May Include: Substance Use Disorders and Addictions, Group Counseling, Counseling Couples and Families, Assessment, Tests, and Measurements, Career Counseling, Principles of Psychopharmacology, Human Sexuality and Issues of Aging, Research Methods and Program Evaluation, Abuse, Crisis, and Trauma Counseling, and/or Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment

What You Will Do

Facilitate weekly main discussion forums to engage students in the online classroom

Adhere to weekly grading requirements, deadlines, and timeframes

Respond to students’ questions and emails within the established timeframes

Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement, and Mission of Grand Canyon University

Doctorate degree in Counselor Education

Independent licensure in counseling or a closely related field (e.g., LPC, LMHC, LCPC, or equivalent)

OR Master’s in degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or related counseling degree AND 5 years work experience as an Independent Licensed Counselor

Maintain an active membership in a recognized counseling association

Show evidence of experience in one or more of the following areas: counseling advocacy; research or other scholarly work; at least two years of clinical practice; or counselor education.
