The candidate will have educational responsibilities for Infectious Disease fellows, Internal Medicine residents and medical students. Applicants must possess a full and unrestricted license in any state and must qualify for an academic appointment at Wayne State University. Applicants must be board certified. Infectious Disease board is desirable.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to: Provide medical care for patients on the Infectious Diseases Service in cooperation with mid-level providers and other ID staff. ID physician will evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultation to patients of all ages with infectious diseases.

Assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative call services. This will include off tour (on call) duties. ID physician will provide assistance to the Infectious Disease Section Chief with regard to other duties that may be requested.

These may include, but are not limited to, assisting in data assimilation for VA reports, per review activities, quality improvement programs (QI), outpatient antibiotics (OPAT), Infection Control (IC), Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP), or others as determined by the Infectious Diseases Section Chief.

Will be expected to take an active role in the education and training of Medical Students, Residents, and ID Fellows. This will include formal lectures and clinic and bedside teaching and will be responsible for appropriate completion of medical records, notes, etc., done by those being supervised.

It is expected that the ID physician will be an active participant in the research activities of the ID section. Reviews, examines, selects diagnostic testing appropriately, and interprets/ collates results to coordinate patient care. Communicates and documents with clarity to patients and medical personnel to coordinate patient care.

Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with facility policy. All administrative work should be completed in a timely fashion. Clinical practice, supervising and teaching fellows, residents and medical students in the specialties of Infectious Disease/ Internal Medicine.

Participation in appropriate subspecialty committees as needed by the facility including but not limited to Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT), Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), and Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP). Assist in meeting goals for outpatient clinic including telehealth with VVC appointments and face to face.

This includes meeting facility goals for minimum days required to see new patient and maintaining facility expectations for outpatient workload and bookable hours. Must work closely with clinical pharmacist.

The physician is expected to share attending call responsibilities with other Infectious Disease/Internal Medicine specialists in covering some nights, weekend and holiday calls as needed. The physician will round with the team of fellow(s), resident(s), and medical student(s) as regards to inpatient settings.

The physician will also be expected to lead and manage the Infectious Disease/Internal Medicine team consisting of fellows, residents, medical students, Pharmacists, Mid-Level Providers, etc. while on inpatient service or in clinical setting.

Administrative activities, including performance improvement activities, research, and non-clinical tasks as assigned. Exhibits leadership in initializing changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and studies.

Stays informed on developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education. Any other duties as assigned by the supervising physician or his/her designee as it relates to scope of practice. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM -Subject to change based off the needs of the service

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) leading to eligibility for board certification, OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) leading to eligibility for board certification, OR (3) One year of post medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States, OR (4) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experience.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs.); light carrying (15 lbs. and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
