WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

• Independently operates and monitors water, swimming pool, and sewage lift station system motors, pumps, valves, chlorinators, booster pumps, tanks, etc., through use of manual means or computer telemetry operating systems. - Works independently in charge of the water pumping treatment plants, Swimming pools, and sewage lift stations. - Troubleshoots/tests various plumbing systems and equipment within the Water Treatment plant including backflow prevention devices such as reduced pressure principle devices, double check devices, atmospheric vacuum breakers and other cross connection devices. - Maintains detailed records during assigned shift to reflect all activities such as periods of operations and amount of water pumped from each well, gauge and chart readings, amounts and types of chemicals used, test result readings, static water level and draw down versus capacity or pumping rate. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5400 Industrial Equipment Operation Family, Utility Systems Operator.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Thorough knowledge of non-filtration processes normally associated with pretreated or ground (well) water Treatment process to change the taste, odor, or chemical content of the water 2.

Ability to perform water treatment tests to check items such as PH level, turbidity, and fluoride, and phosphate content 3. Skill in the use of instruments such as ethylometers and PH meters to take measurements. Skill in using a computerized water monitoring system.

Skill in troubleshooting plant operations and performing minor maintenance repairs on plant equipment 4. Skill in adding silicates and chemical agents such as fluoride, chlorine, and manganese into the water system. Skill in repairing sewage lift station pumping equipment such and submersible sewage ejection pumps and float systems. 5.

Knowledgeable of proper procedures for monitoring and maintaining the quality of swimming pool water and chlorination levels. 6. Knowledge of State Federal reporting requirements and Federal regulations which cover the addition of water treatment chemicals. 7.

Must possess or be capable of obtaining a backflow prevention certificate of competency to comply with State and Air Force guidance. Physical Effort: Considerable walking, standing on concrete floors and uneven surfaces, and climbing stairways and ladders.

Light to moderate physical effort is necessary to turn valves and move chlorine cylinders and chemical drums. Frequently lift and carry items up to 25 pounds unassisted and 50 pounds with assistance. Works in tight or confined places and climbs ladders. Working Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

Works with poisonous chemicals such as chlorine gas, acids, reagents, and caustic chemicals which could cause serious injuries. Works with raw sewage. There is exposure continuous noise from machinery, danger of electrical shocks and falls while working on tanks.

Works in rural environments are potentially coming into contact with bees, snakes, wild pigs, coyotes, etc. Required to wear safety toe shoes and other protective clothing and equipment on the job. May be required to remain clean shaven in order to wear self-contained breathing apparatus in emergency conditions.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
