This position is located in the American Folklife Center, Special Collections Directorate, Researcher and Collections Services within the Library Collections and Services Group at the Library of Congress.
As a Reference Librarian, you will: Interview researchers, analyze their questions and requirements, and recommend materials appropriate to their needs. Orient readers to the reading room and its services.
Guide researchers in employing search strategies that tap the full range of the Division's reference tools and resources to meet the researcher's need. Provide information on the collections, finding tools, and relevant reference sources.
Maintain awareness and knowledge of folklife or related fields, developments in the field, and availability of reference and resource materials. Develop, promote, facilitate, present, and evaluate programs to meet the expressed and anticipated needs of researchers and other user communities.
Assist with arrangements for new acquisitions or donations by scheduling delivery of objects and preparing listings of new items. The position description number for this position is 446149. The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.
The incumbent of this position will work a Flexitime work schedule. This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position. Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected under this vacancy announcement.
Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.
Ability to provide reference and research services.** Ability to develop and manage research collections.** Knowledge of folklife, oral history, military history, and/or related fields.** Ability to provide consultation, outreach, and liaison services.** Ability to utilize information technology to perform library services.
Ability to communicate in writing. Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
