Librarian Metadata Services Developer

Performs a variety of professional tasks associated with metadata creation and enhancements, improving automated processes, and writing computer scripts and programs for new metadata processes.

Works closely with the Metadata Initiatives Team Manager, team members, and other staff on the development and implementation of new metadata policies and workflows and new metadata products, services, and tools.

Analyzes varied and evolving issues that require technical knowledge across a wide range of fields and often involve issues of substance related to the Federal Depository Library Program and the Cataloging and Indexing Program.

Plays a role in the success of GPO's information dissemination services to Federal depository libraries, agencies, and to the public, and their assistance in this work affects the policies and the acceptance of these programs by key customers.

Performs amidst a very fluid and sensitive policy backdrop that merges GPO capabilities, the requirements of public and client agencies, leading-edge information technology, and emerging federal information policy.

Selectee may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

To qualify for the Librarian Metadata Services Developer, PG - 1410 - 13 , you must meet the following requirements: BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: All librarians must meet a Basic Educational Requirement of professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and/or education as shown below. A.

Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. OR B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience.

To qualify on this basis, the applicant must show conclusively that the education, training and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; knowledge of literature resources; and possess the competencies essential for providing effective library information and library technical services.

In addition to meeting the Basic Educational Requirements as described above, applicants must meet the following specialized experience as noted below. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (PG-12) or equivalent in the federal service or higher.

Specialized experience may include but is not limited to: (1) Performing metadata creation and enhancements activities, including improving automated processes and developing scripts or programs to support new metadata functions; (2) Applying national, international, and local cataloging standards to ensure high-quality bibliographic and authority records; AND (3) Using tools and applications, such as Government information products, primarily the Integrated Library System (ILS), the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and Catalog of U.S.

Government Publications (CGP) to manage and organize U.S. Government information products. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
