Industrial Hygienist

Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.

Maintains oversight of Federal regulatory and Agency-level requirements; develops, implements, and maintains Center-level IH/HP and Occupational Health programs to ensure compliance and provide a safe workplace.

Provides services for Center compliance with hazardous materials management and chemical use restrictions in accordance with the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and ensures proper implementation of the hazardous materials information tracking.

Coordinates with the occupational medical clinic and employee assistance programs for the Center to ensure compliance to medical surveillance of NASA and regulatory requirements.

Serves as a technical lead responsible for oversight and coordination of the Center's Industrial Hygiene programs, including exposure assessments, hazard evaluations, occupational health, regulatory compliance, and emergency response.

Represents the Center on NASA agency working groups (IH/EH, HP, Food Safety, Ergonomics, and the agency’s hazardous materials) and advisory panels to include the NASA Institutional Safety and Health Board.

Performs inspections for the food sanitation program for the Center.

Coordinates the development, selection, and oversight of Government-provided Environmental and Occupational Health services, ensuring regulatory and policy requirements are captured in contractor Performance Work Statements.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-11, you must have: a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level: Conducting exposure assessments involving chemical, physical, or biological hazards by collecting and analyzing data, comparing results to established standards, and recommending measures to support occupational health and regulatory compliance.

OR b) Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field OR c) Completed 3 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in an appropriate field.

OR d) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b) and c) above To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level: Managing or administering industrial hygiene programs by evaluating occupational hazards, conducting exposure assessments, and supporting compliance with Federal, NASA, and organizational requirements.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Implementing industrial hygiene and health physics practices by evaluating occupational hazards, developing mitigation recommendations, and supporting occupational health programs to ensure compliance with Federal, NASA, and organizational requirements.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Leading industrial hygiene, health physics, and occupational health programs by directing hazard evaluations, developing mitigation strategies, and providing technical oversight to ensure compliance with Federal, NASA, and organizational requirements.
