Implement a comprehensive nutrition and dietetics program serving the patient population of the Sisseton Service Unit, with an emphasis on medical nutrition therapy, diabetes education, prevention, and management, and community nutrition education.
Incumbent will participate in the total service unit dietetics program, including short- and long-range program plans consistent with IHS Area and national nutrition program goals and policies.
Will provide MNT through direct patient care for a wide variety of chronic conditions, including diabetes, renal disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hepatic disease, carcinoma, alcoholism, infectious disease, and trauma. Will serve as the Nutrition expert for local tribal programs, families, individuals, and clinic staff.
Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), menu planning, nutritional counseling, education material development and review, program planning, in-service training, and group class coordination and facilitating. Perform other duties as assigned to support the dietetics program.
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience.
You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirements General Schedule Qualification Standards - Dietetics and Nutrition Series 0630 Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science.
The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics(external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)(external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association(external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
Minimum Qualifications, GS-0630-09: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Examples Include: Evaluate nutritional assessments; review and interpret treatment data; develop nutritional care plan; provide nutritional education to individuals, families, and community groups.
OR 2 years of progressively higher lever graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree Minimum Qualifications, GS-0630-11: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Examples Include: Develop nutritional care plans; provide consulting services to patients; assess nutritional needs related to several types of diabetes; interview techniques and patient care management OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Possess and maintain current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). This position has promotion potential to the GS-11 grade level.
Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
