SHEET METAL MECHANIC HELPER

This is a developmental position which can be filled at the WG-05, WG-08 or WG-10 grade level.

The individual selected for this position at the WG-05 OR WG-08 grade level may be promoted to the target level without further competition upon meeting legal and regulatory requirements. - Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in the construction and maintenance of installation facilities. - Develops patterns, cuts, forms, joins, assembles, and installs items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes. - Welds commonly used metals in connection with the construction and restoration of sheet metal products. - Performs sheet metal mechanic duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedures, and complying with established safety rules and regulations. - Operates and maintains complex hand and power tools and equipment such as sliproll forming machines, box and pan brakes, rotary machines with extra forming rolls, and crimping, burring, turning, and beading machines, and soldering and welding equipment to fabricate and repair items.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800 - Metal Work group.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a SHEET METAL MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. May be required to train and/or guide lower graded employees. 2. May be required to be certified for working with and/or removing hazardous materials. 3.

May be required to work shifts or uncommon tours of duty. Subject to call back to meet emergency situations. 4. The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier items.

Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools. Weight lifted seldom exceeds 50 pounds. 5. The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle.

An appropriate, valid driver's license is required for the position. 6. This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TOP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.

Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.

Physical Effort: Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing on production lines; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools. Weight lifted seldom exceeds 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Works inside shops and outside at job sites. In shops, is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery. When working outside is subject to a variety of weather conditions. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Shop areas normally have adequate lighting and ventilation.

Required to wear protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
