This position is critical, requiring availability during emergencies, inclement weather, holidays, weekends, and possibly rotating shifts as determined by management. The incumbent must promptly respond to environmental conditions, fire alarms, utility outages, or other emergencies occurring outside normal working hours.
This position is located within the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, United States Botanic Garden (USBG), Operations Division.
The Operations Division oversees the daily operations and maintenance of all USBG facilities, including the Production Facility, Administration Building, and the Conservatory, along with outdoor garden areas and water features.
The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor (Operations & Maintenance Supervisor) plays an essential role in ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of USBG facilities, supporting the organization's mission and goals through effective leadership and management of maintenance activities and is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising maintenance activities.
The work being supervised includes various trades, including but not limited to the maintenance, repair, and installation of commercial and industrial systems and equipment including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, building automation, and fire protection MAJOR DUTIES Supervises a work unit composed of Maintenance Mechanics performing work up to the WG-12 level, ensuring safe and effective performance of maintenance tasks.
Incumbent plans use of subordinate workers' equipment, facilities and materials on a week-to-week or month-to-month basis. Establishes deadlines, priorities and work sequences and plans work assignments based on general work schedules, methods and policies set by higher level management.
Coordinates work operations with supporting related work functions. Determines the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific projects. Redirects individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work or equipment failure.
Works with the Operations Division Director (Director of Capital Projects & Facilities) to revise work schedules and execute plans that ensure the efficient use of labor and materials for the safe and continuous delivery of services and for proper operations and maintenance that support the AOC and USBG mission and extend the life of USBG facilities, systems, and equipment.
Observes work in progress, investigates work related problems and determines causes. Implements corrective actions to resolve work problems. Resolves staffing and work operations problems. Establishes or revises standard operating procedures for the work operation.
Promptly informs the Operations Division Director (Director of Capital Projects & Facilities) of any safety-related incidents/concerns, service interruptions, utility outages, personnel issues, and/or other related concerns.
Uses Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and/or Computer-Aided Facility Management (CAFM) Systems for work planning, assignment, and documentation. Ensures compliance with OSHA safety regulations, conducts safety training, and addresses safety concerns promptly.
The incumbent is responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas.
Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training to ensure that all direct reports know how to use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Routinely checks to verify that subordinates are using all required PPE.
Acts as the Responsible Contact Person (RCP) during emergencies and routine operations to ensure proper communication and coordination between responding parties. Ensures daily communications are completed with management and other supervisors.
Based on duties assigned, employees may require knowledge of hazardous (e.g. lead paint and solvents) and universal (e.g. lamps and batteries) waste management requirements to ensure compliance with environmental regulations in performance of duties (e.g. decide hazardous material is no longer needed and will be disposed, select containers for waste accumulation, add waste to containers, label containers, move waste to and from waste accumulation sites, manage waste accumulation sites).
Provides waste management guidance and answer questions concerning waste management. Performs other related duties as assigned.
