Careers have gravity. Some occupations sit at the center of the skill map, reachable from dozens of starting points, and some sit at the edge, reachable from almost none. We measured it directly. For each of the 153 occupations in our July 2026 corpus, we counted how many other occupations cover at least 40 percent of its demanded skills, its in-degree: the number of fields whose people could cross into it without starting over.
The fields with the most gravity are not the ones you would guess from a salary table.

Every one of the top fifteen is rated high demand. Not most of them. All of them. So we split the map in two and compared: the strong absorbers, the eighteen occupations reachable from six or more fields, against the weak ones reachable from two or fewer.
Gravity follows the shortage, not the salary
This is the finding, and it is worth sitting with. The careers that the most skill sets can reach are the ones the market is short of, not the ones that pay the most. Construction manager, dietitian, project manager, database administrator, nurse practitioner: high demand, widely reachable, and clustered in the middle of the pay range rather than the top. The strong absorbers average an $89,000 posted midpoint and 4 percent fully remote. The hard-to-reach fields average $97,000 and 6 percent remote. Reachability tracks demand, and demand is a measure of what is missing, not of what is prized.
The mechanism is not mysterious. A field becomes reachable from many directions when its demanded skills are common ones: project coordination, clinical fundamentals, systems administration, the widely-held competencies. Common skills are common because many people have them, which is exactly why those fields can hire broadly, and also why they do not have to pay a scarcity premium. The best-paid fields are rare-skilled and therefore reachable from almost nowhere. The pay and the accessibility trade off against each other, and the trade is legible in the data.
What this changes about a pivot
If your aim is to get hired, aim at gravity. The high-in-degree fields are where a broad skill set converts into an offer fastest, because the demand is real and the coverage bar is one many profiles clear. If your aim is to get paid, gravity can mislead you, because the most reachable destinations are mid-band by construction. The two goals are not the same move, and the honest version of career advice keeps them apart.
We built the tools to answer them separately. The instrument shows which fields your own skills can reach; the salary pages show what each one actually pays across the distribution; and the earlier piece on the adjacency premium covers the third of crossings that do point to a raise. Reachable and better-paid is a shorter list than reachable. Know which one you are optimizing before you retrain.
