Same family, different jobs: eight career pairs everyone confuses, measured

Product manager and project manager share 24 percent of a skill set. Graphic designers and UX designers share 13 percent and a doubled salary band. We measured the eight most-confused title pairs from each occupation’s own live postings: the overlap, the pay gap, and which direction the switch actually runs.

A job title is a marketing decision, and the market makes the same handful of confusions every day: product and project manager treated as one job, UX hired as if it were graphic design with better tools, data analyst and data scientist used interchangeably in the same paragraph. We measure skill overlap between occupations from live postings, in both directions, so these arguments can end with a number. We ran the eight most-confused pairs. Half of them share a family name and almost nothing else.

Product manager vs project manager

24%of what product-manager postings demand, a typical project manager already covers. The reverse direction shares too few skills to score at all.

The most-argued pair in tech, settled: mostly different jobs. The project manager’s missing quarter is telling: today’s product-manager postings ask for prototyping, REST APIs, and generative-AI tooling, none of which appear in project-management demand. The pay agrees: posted mid-bands run $86k–$170k for product against $75k–$130k for project. The full comparison has both sides; the boards have product and project roles live.

Graphic designer vs UX designer

13% / 12%mutual overlap — near-strangers professionally — while the posted bands run $42k–$73k against $74k–$151k.

The most expensive confusion on the list. The shared core is essentially Figma and motion design; from there the jobs diverge into branding and production on one side, interaction design, prototyping, and user research on the other. Treating UX as “graphic design, newer” is how a doubled salary band gets left on the table. The measured pair shows the exact gap lists.

Half of these pairs share a family name and almost nothing else.

Data analyst vs data scientist

65% ↓ / 31% ↑a scientist mostly covers an analyst’s demand; an analyst covers a third of a scientist’s. The ladder runs one way.

The closest pair here, and still directional. The shared core is real — SQL, Python, statistics, visualization, ETL — which is why this is one of the most-walked routes on the instrument. The missing two-thirds is machine learning, generative AI, deep learning, and NLP, and it prices in: $56k–$95k posted for analysts against $84k–$163k for scientists. Product designer vs UX designer

91% / 40%a product designer nearly IS a UX designer; the reverse is a real move.

The asymmetry pair. Product-designer skills cover 91 percent of UX posting demand: the transition estimate reads 3–8 months, effectively a retitle. Going the other way, a UX designer covers 40 percent of product-design demand, and the gap is the breadth: writing, systems, the commercial edges of the role. Backend vs frontend developer

21% / 13%“full-stack” is a hiring word for two jobs that share REST, Java, AWS, CI/CD — and little else.

The shared core is the plumbing every developer touches. The divergence is everything that fills a working week: JavaScript, TypeScript, and the browser on one side; microservices, Python, SQL, and Kubernetes on the other. Posted bands: $87k–$146k backend, $57k–$127k frontend. Side by side.

Registered nurse vs nurse practitioner

94% + a licensean RN’s skills nearly cover NP posting demand — and none of that shortens the graduate degree and state licensure between the titles.

The pair that shows why we display credential gates separately from skill readiness. On skills alone an RN reads 94 percent ready for nurse-practitioner work; the honest transition line still says “+ license,” because an APRN license and the degree behind it stand regardless. The reward for the years: posted NP bands reach $135k against an RN’s $59k–$109k. The comparison carries both gates.

Lawyer vs paralegal

74% / 24%a lawyer mostly covers paralegal demand; a paralegal covers a quarter of lawyer demand — and the bar exam is the wall between the bands.

Shared vocabulary (contracts, case management, procurement) and a licensing wall. The posted bands tell the rest: $94k–$189k against $40k–$74k. This is the cleanest example of a pair where the skill number is not the story; the credential is. Measured here.

Architect vs interior designer

58% / 58%the rare symmetric pair: each covers the same share of the other’s demand.

The house classic, and the only pair on this list that is genuinely mutual. Shared: Revit, project management, construction documentation, presentation. Each side’s gap is the other’s trade: space planning, procurement, and FF&E (furniture, fixtures, and equipment) going one way; BIM and building codes coming back, plus the architecture license. The overlap number is directional. Which way you travel matters.

The pattern across all eight: titles cluster into families, and families hide asymmetries. One title contains the other (product designer and UX), one is gated by a credential the other lacks (NP and RN, lawyer and paralegal), or the two simply share a word and a floor plan (product and project). A comparison settles which case you are in, and then the question becomes personal: not whether a typical profile covers the gap, but whether yours does.

All figures are read from the PivotHop posting corpus (July 2026 run; each occupation’s own live postings; salary bands are posted 25th–75th percentiles, stated salaries only). Overlap is directional coverage: the share of one occupation’s posted skill demand that a typical profile from the other already covers; pairs sharing too few skills are left unscored rather than guessed. Is a product manager the same as a project manager?

No, and the data is blunt about it: a typical project manager’s skills cover only 24 percent of what product-manager postings demand, and the reverse direction shares too few skills to score at all. The pay reflects it: posted mid-bands run $86k–$170k for product managers against $75k–$130k for project managers. Same first word, different jobs.

Is UX design the same as graphic design?

They are the most expensively confused pair we measure. Can a data analyst become a data scientist?

This pair runs one way. A data scientist’s skills cover 65 percent of data-analyst demand, but an analyst covers only 31 percent of data-science demand — the gap is machine learning, generative AI, deep learning, and NLP. The shared core (SQL, Python, statistics, visualization) is real, which is why the analyst-to-scientist route is popular; the missing third is why it takes 9–16 months, not a title change.

What is the difference between a lawyer and a paralegal?

A license, mostly — and the market prices it. A lawyer’s skills cover 74 percent of paralegal posting demand, but a paralegal covers only 24 percent of lawyer demand, and the gate between them is a law degree and the bar, not a skill gap. How is career overlap measured?

From live postings. For each occupation we extract the skills its postings demand; the overlap number is the share of one occupation’s posted skill demand that a typical profile from the other already covers.
